My Jeep Grand Cherokee ECU Mix-Up: How AutoZone and Encore Automotive Saved My Bacon
If you’ve ever spent a few late-night hours diagnosing a car issue, you’ll know how it goes—you go from mild curiosity to full-blown YouTube-certified mechanic in the span of an evening. That was me a few weeks ago, sitting in the garage with my 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, trying to figure out why it had started acting possessed.
We’re talking engine stalling, random misfires, hard starts, sluggish acceleration, and even weird transmission shifting that made the whole drive feel off. And of course, the check engine light was glowing at me like it knew I was about to lose sleep over it.
After running diagnostics and doing a little research, all signs pointed to the same culprit — the Engine Control Module (ECM), or the car’ brain. Mine was starting to fail.
The Hunt for a Replacement ECU
Now, if you’ve ever priced an ECU replacement at a car dealer, regardless of make or model, you know those things aren’t cheap. On top of that, ECUs are considered electronic special-order items, which basically means: once you buy it, you own it – no returns, no exceptions. So if you happen to order the wrong one? Tough luck.
I was able to isolate the correct part number online and started searching. Lucky for me, I stumbled across AutoZone’s website right away and noticed something interesting: they sell Encore Automotive ECUs, which are genuine OE parts, offer a 1-year warranty, and the part clearly states that it’s made in the USA.
That last part caught my attention. Most of the other options I found were rather shady-looking and cheaply-priced imported aftermarket units claiming “OEM-like compatibility” but clearly weren’t the real deal. The Encore part though sold through AutoZone, which I like and trust, was legit—and for a fair price.
The Late-Night Click (and the Oops Moment)
Feeling good about my find, I jumped on the opportunity. It was late, I was tired, and I was just excited to have found a genuine OE ECU without the hassles of dealing with the Jeep dealership’s parts department. So I hit “Add to Cart,” checked out, and went to bed feeling like I’d solved all my problems.
Fast forward three days—my brand new genuine OE Encore Automotive ECU showed up at my door, right on schedule. I opened the box, admired the Made-in-USA tag, and then double-checked the label … That’s when my heart sank! I had ordered part number ECU-D20002. The correct one for my 2017 Grand Cherokee should’ve been ECU-D20001. The one I bought was for 2020 and newer models. Rookie mistake.
The Return That Could’ve Been a Nightmare
Normally, this is where things go downhill. If I had ordered the ECU through the dealer, I’d be out several hundred bucks. Since ECUs are special-order electrical components, dealers almost always refuse returns—even if the box is unopened.
But this time, I caught a break.
I hopped onto AutoZone’s return portal, filled out a quick return request, explained that I’d ordered the wrong part, and within seconds got the green light to send it back. No arguments, no hoops to jump through, no “restocking fee” surprises.
Once that was handled, I immediately ordered the correct Encore ECU-D20001 for my 2017 model.
The Encore Advantage
A few days later, the right ECU arrived. It looked perfect, installed easily, and the Jeep fired up like new. I rest the codes and took it out on a drive. No stalling, no misfires, no funky shifting. Just as smooth and strong as when I bought it new back in 2017.
Looking back, I’m very glad I went the Encore Automotive + AutoZone route. If I’d gone through the dealer, I’d probably still be arguing with a parts counter about a return or eating the cost of my own mistake. Instead, I got the right genuine OE ECU, made in the USA, same 1-year warranty, and without the usual dealership hassle or markup.
Lesson Learned
Ordering parts online at 11 p.m. might not be the smartest idea—but at least AutoZone’s return policy had my back. And for anyone out there who loves their Jeep Grand Cherokee but doesn’t love dealing with parts departments at the dealer with their rigid return rules, do yourself a favor:
Buy Encore Automotive’s genuine OE parts through AutoZone. You’ll save money, time, and a whole lot of frustration.
